Powderpuff Football

Powderpuff Football

from $15.00

In Toledo, an organized annual women’s football game dates back to at least 1950. The on-again, off-again tradition of the “Powderpuff” girls gridiron game was originally tackle, though still without equipment, but evolved into flag football.

This photo from Nov. 11, 1950 shows the first annual “Powder Bowl” between Alpha Xi Delta and Delta Gamma sororities at Bowling Green State University. The tackle contest was won by Delta Gamma 8-0.

In addition to the score, the Toledo Times article actually listed the height, weight, measurements, and phone number of Alpha’s Anne Huston.

Powderpuf, or more commonly just women’s flag football, is still enjoyed in Toledo.
