In this photo, Rob Saxton on Feb. 11, 1989 winds down the fifth day of his quest at Walbridge Skate roller rink to set a Guinness Book of World Records mark for continuous roller skating.

At 10:48 p.m. Feb. 19, the Blade reported a “starry-eyed” Saxton had just broken the Guinness Book of World Records mark for continuous roller skating. With a time of just under 350 hours, the 20-year-old broke the record set in Japan in 1983.

He was allowed a five-minute break every hour and 1½ hours of sleep. After officially calling it quits during the early morning hours of Feb. 20, the Air Force recruit was asked what he would do next.

“I think I’m just going to go home and crash.”
